I met Jason Noble in 2002. I was sent out by a California-based magazine to do some photos of the Rachel's, who had just released a new album, entitled Systems/Layers. Myself and the band spent much of the day wandering around Louisville, taking photos, and throwing various ideas up in the air. We laughed, we talked, and I had a lot of fun that day. Some really good photos came out of that shoot. I had also photographed Jason when he was playing in the Shipping News, which I also discovered that day.
In 2009, it was announced that Jason was battling cancer. Jason started a Caring Bridge blog to keep up with his progress. I signed up for the blog, as did many of us that knew, or had met Jason. I wrote him and wished him well, as did others. It can be difficult to watch the ups and downs of a friend's battles with cancer, even from a distance. The highs, the lows, the remissions, and the darker lows. But in doing so, Jason brought a lot of people together. In his life, his music, and his battle to fight the dark fight. The struggle and reach for how many more days we can enjoy together on this lonely planet was in Jason, as it is eventually in all of us.
I will miss Jason's blog posts. I will miss Jason. However, I take comfort in knowing that Jason is no longer in pain, and I hope that he will explore the outer reaches of whatever wonders and possibilities are out there. Much he tried to do in his music, and his life.
Safe travels, Jason,
