May A Sad Moment Lead To Better Times

Like many others, I was heartbroken to see the fire that destroyed much of Jim and Susie Avett's home over the weekend. My first photo and recording sessions with the Avett Brothers were done behind that house, and visiting the homestead from time to time has always been a wonderful memory to return to.

Thankfully, Jim and Susie will rebuild, but any love, support and good vibes you can send to them is greatly appreciated. Bad things happen to good people too many times in this world, but how we respond is how we can again make things better.

RIP Billy Hinsche

When Billy Hinsche came to Mooresville, NC for a benefit concert in 2009, I was given the task of being his driver. What a fun day, discussing music, stories of the Beach Boys, and so much more. Billy, you did so much, and you've left us all too soon. Sail on sailor. See you in the stars.

The Last Couple Of Weeks

 The last two weeks. Whoa.

Photographed multiple galas and events in several cities, several concerts, including last night's Sam On Sunday concert at Petra's, welcomed family members from NY and PA to visit my parents (happy birthday Mom), prepped two big upcoming happenings in the coming weeks (news coming soon), and announced the return of the Double Door Inn reunion concert at the Neighborhood Theatre on December 19th. Tickets are on sale now.

One more big week before the holidays. Here we go. Take care of yourself and others out there, and see you on the road.

Veteran's Day 2021

I've been meaning to do a longer post about recent events, but this post demanded attention.

This past Sunday, I went out to the airshow in Monroe, NC. It was great to see it again, after the ongoing blip in time known as 2020. I saw lots of planes, friends I hadn't seen in years. But I have come to realize why I go to events like the airshow. I'm looking for my grandfathers.

Both of my grandfathers served in WWII. My dad's father, Don Coston, served in the Navy on the USS Conbarre, which survived a torpedo attack. My mom's father, George King, was a founding member of the 9th Division, and was part of the campaigns in Africa, Italy and D-Day. It was with him that I went to Army reunions in the 1990s, and remains a huge influence on my life.

I saw and hear both of them as I walk through all of the WWII displays. Walking through the transport plane that flew over Normandy the same day that George went ashore. All of the comments that would have made, and their occasional cursing. Yes, I hear that, too, guys. I hear you.

Recently, I discovered a home movie from 1948 that includes my dad's parents. There's Don, with a full head of hair and a cigar in hand, leaning over my father, who was just six weeks old. Here he is, a few years removed from the war. Moving forward, but those days were always a part of their lives. And in so doing, became part of mine.

Happy Veteran's Day to all that served, and those that carry their stories. See you again soon, ol' kids. At the next airshow, and in the stars.

The Last Several Days

The past week. Photos of Kim Richey at Neighborhood Theatre, trips to the NC mountains, and Statesville, NC. Photos of several events and concerts, including the Charlotte Symphony, and a house concert on Friday night, shows last night in Mooresville and Albemarle, NC, and today's HBCU Battle Of The Bands at Bojangles Coliseum.

I'm back on Daniel Sam's show on Monday at 7pm, talking about the Beatles Anthology 2. See you there, and see you on the road.
