I have been a freelance photographer, and occasional writer for Charlotte Magazine since 1998. Mark Lynch introduced me to then publisher Rick Thurmond at a show in 1998, and I convinced Rick (and myself) that I could photograph events, as well as crazy Rock & Roll bands.
Many people messaged and emailed me on Thursday night, and asked me how I felt about the Magazine closing its doors. Despite my history with Charlotte Magazine, I don't feel sorry for this era of my life coming to an end. I feel sorry for those that will have to spend the holiday season searching for another job, and I feel sorry for the non-profits and for profits that I was able to feature in the Magazine's Spotted section every month, knowing that another outlet for covering what's around us has slipped from our fingers.
In the end, we can lament its loss, but also be grateful that Charlotte Magazine existed, changing the lives of some of us, myself included, for the better.
Here's to what has been, what has gone, and the hope for what comes next. Here's to Charlotte Magazine, in all of its colors and moments.
