RIP Boyd Albritton

Boyd Albritton was a key part of the North Carolina music scene in the late 1960s and early 70s, before moving to California and playing with everyone from Quicksilver Messenger Service to Buddy Miles, John Lee Hooker, Buddy Cage and many others. I interviewed Boyd for There Was A Time, and had many conversations with him. Safe travels, Boyd, and thank you for all the music.

A New Piece By Archie Thomas On The There Was A Time Site

Hello All-

Archie Thomas, the lead singer of the legendary Bondsmen, was written a piece about the band's recent reunion that I put together at Neighborhood Theatre. Check out the There Was A Time book site, therewasatimebook.blogspot.com, and my thanks to Archie for all the kind words. Look for a longer piece on the Bondsmen in the near future.

Thanks, and see you on the road,

Head In A Book (again)

Hello Everyone-

Happy new year. My original plan for the New Year was to have a bunch of new essays done for this page. But ah, how plans can change. With some time off this week from my usual cavalcade of photography work, I have finally been making headway on my book on the North Carolina rock and roll scene of the 1960s. Nine tapes transcribed and inputted in three days, and then eight chapters edited yesterday. There's still some work to do, but it is coming soon. There will also be a new blog for this book coming soon, where you'll be able to buy your own copies.

For those of you that have found me through the recent feature on the Avett Brothers in Our State Magazine, welcome. More writings about the Avett's, the recent Robbinsville reissue, and my photos of them coming soon. FYI, you'll also be able to see and read more about the Avett Brothers later this year, when my coffeetable book on NC musicians (separate book from the one I mentioned above) comes out through McFarland Publications.

I'll be back soon with more updates, and a big photo announcement. Happy new year, and safe travels,
-Daniel

There Was A Time, the 1960s NC rock scene book

For the past year and a half, I have been working on a book on the rock scene of North Carolina, with a focus on the Charlotte scene. The initial idea for the book came from Jake Berger, a longtime musician in the Charlotte scene. He first pitched me the idea while I was working on the Double Door Inn book (which is still available on Amazon, or from me), and I finally found the time last year to start working on the book. I am now in the editing stages, but am collecting more info about bands and scenes throughout North Carolina.

If you were in a band in the 1960s in NC, played with any bands in NC during that time, or have some cool photos or stories from that period, please email me at danielcoston@aol.com, and I'll write you back immediately. Thanks.
