RIP Aaron Carter

My first gig for the Charlotte Observer was an Aaron Carter concert. That day in October of 2000, I photographed a twelve year old in a Walmart parking lot, surrounded by screaming young girls, signing autographs, then hopping back on his tour bus. It seems so long ago. My best wishes to his family, and I hope that Aaron enjoys better travels on the great highway.

Charlotte Observer Top Seniors Section

For 19 years, I have been a contributing photographer to the Charlotte Observer, with many of those years photographing the Scene & Heard section. Certain special projects, like the annual Top Seniors section, were always handled by the staffers. So imagine my surprise two weeks ago when I was hired to shoot this year's Top Seniors section. I had the run of the Observer photo studio. For a day, I was the photographer in-residence. The results are across two pages in today's paper. Congratulations to all of the seniors featured in this year's section, and to all of them, I say, keep trying. Keep at what you love to do, and want to do. It may not happen how you first planned it, but someday, it may happen just the same. See you in print, and see you on the road.

The End Of Scene & Heard

For the last 16 years, I have contributed photos to the Charlotte Observer's Scene & Heard section. The first event I shot for the column? An Aaron Carter show in a Wal-Mart parking lot. Yes, really. Ah, how far this city has come. I have been S&H's main photographer for the past several years, showing off the best and the brightest of events and people that this city has to offer. And it all has meant the world to me. It made me a better photographer, and introduced me to so many of you that follow these posts.

The Observer has decided to discontinue Scene & Heard, which has recently been in the Sunday living section, at the end of October. Someone told me last week, "The only reason I keep a subscription is to read your column, and the obits." I've kept my subscription for the first part. But times are changing, and change is not always easy. But it comes, nonetheless.

What will become of me? Scene & Heard now officially moves to Southpark Magazine, as part of their Swirl section. Will I be at as many events? Time will tell. But I look forward to continuing the work with Sarah Crosland that I began with Olivia Fortson 16 years ago. A lot of great photographers contributed to Scene & Heard over the newspaper's storied history, and I was always proud to continue that line of covering the people and places throughout Charlotte. This is not the end of a dream, but more that moment when the dream changes into something else. And hopefully grows into something more.

Thank you to all of you that have been of the Scene & Heard story. I gave it all I had, and it was worth every photo. Safe travels, see you in the magazine, and see you on the road.

Thank You Olivia

Today is a sad day for me, as it is the last day at the Charlotte Observer for Olivia Fortson, who has been their society editor for the last 24 years. Olivia first hired me fifteen years ago to take photos for her Scene & Heard section. My first event for her was photographing then-tween pop star Aaron Carter at a Walmart appearance. Needless to say, events and gala in Charlotte have come a long way since then. 

Over the past fifteen years, Olivia and I became great friends, and we both worked hard to cover the bright lights of Charlotte’s comings and goings. Many of you first met me at those events. While I hope to continue to take photos for the Observer, I honestly do not know what the future is for me, or Scene & Heard. Change is constant, and change has arrived. The laughs come hard in Auld Lang Syne. Whatever comes from this, it will be different without Olivia, whose elegant work has guided the paper’s  attempts to canvas the town, and brush the backdrop. All we can do is go forward. Columnated ruins domino.  

I dedicate this song today to Olivia, her 24 years with the Observer, and her future. And perhaps mine, as well. I heard this song on the radio last week, while on my way to a photo shoot, and I thought, “That says it all.” Surf's Up, aboard the tidal wave. Thank you Olivia for my being my editor and friend for the last fifteen years, and for all of the photos. It was a wonderful thing, like a children’s song.
