Author Talk With Rachelle Atkins, Visart Video, May 24, 2025

Ever since my friend Rachelle Atkins released her first book, Sleep Like Starfish, I've wanted to put together an authors conversation with her. I then released three books in one day, and we decided to put it all together into one party.

On May 24th at 7pm, you can visit myself and Shel at for a conversation about books, writing and lots of other topics. We will have our books there for sale, as well. Spread the word, and I will see you at Visart, and see you on the road.

Events This Saturday, And Talk On June 21

Two other things to let you know about, while I'm letting folks know about the new third edition of the Double Door Inn book. On Saturday, I'll be taking photos at the Beatles tribute at the Knight Theater. I'll also be selling books (thank you John Tosco), so come by and say hello. On Wednesday, June 21st, I'll be doing a talk about my photos at 7pm at the Cornwell Conference Center, at Myers Park Baptist Church. Since there will be a number of photographers in the room, I'll be talking more about taking photos, and the stories behind photographing Johnny Cash, the Avett Brothers, and others. I am hoping to have the new Double Door Inn book at both events, but if they have not arrived, you can sign up to be the first in town to receive copies. Spread the word, love to you all, and see you in the bookstores, the concerts, the rec halls and other places, and see you on the road.

A Reminder About My Show Premiere, And Book Talk On September 24th

Five days ago, I was excited about presenting my library talk, and new photo show opening on Saturday. With so much turmoil around us, it seems a bit silly to remind you all about tomorrow’s events, as important as they are to me. But that is life. We press on, even currents sometimes pull us elsewhere. And I am proud of this work, and the people that are featured in it. So here goes.

At 2pm on September 24th, I’ll be speaking at the Plaza-Midwood Library about the Rock & Roll scene in North Carolina during the 1960s. Lots of photos, new information and new stories. Then, at 6pm, I’ll be at C3 Lab to debut my new show of photos. This is a show of just my photos of the Charlotte music scene from 1996 to 2001. The musicians and friends that drew me in as a photographer, and still are a part of what I’m doing today. There are over 90 photos in this show, most of which has never been seen or exhibited before. I’ve also curated a special playlist of music from Charlotte-area bands from that time. I also asked my friends Derrick J. Hines and Albert Strawn of Bless These Sounds Under The City at 7pm, because they are my good friends, and their music is beautiful. Many of you that will read this in Charlotte are in this show, because you should be. When the show is finished in three weeks, the contents will be donated to the Main Library (sorry I haven’t told you sooner, Shelia Bumgarner, but now you know), so that others will know someday what the Charlotte music scene was like, and that it was made up by a lot of good people. And still is.

I hope to see you all Saturday, or sometime soon. The world is turning, but I hope that you don’t turn away. Safe travels, and see you on the road.

My Event Schedule In September, And New Show Of Photos

September 11- Signing copies of my North Carolina Musicians book at the Mast General Store in Winston-Salem, NC from 1pm to 4pm. One of the stars of the book, Chatham County Line is playing a free show in Winston-Salem that afternoon from 3pm to 6pm.

September 24- NC 1960s Rock & Roll book talk, “From The 60s To Now”, Plaza Midwood Library in Charlotte, NC 2pm to 3pm. I’m bringing newly found photos and new information to this talk.

September 24th- NEW SHOW OF PHOTOS! I’m partnering with the folks of C3 Lab, at 2525 Distribution St., for a show of my photos of the Charlotte music scene from 1996 to 2001. Up to 90 never-before seen photos from the first few years of my accidental photography career. There’ll be a few national acts mixed in, but this show is about the friends and musicians that influenced the Charlotte scene, and the people that made me want to document it. This will also mark my third exhibition of photos, all running at the same time. Opening night party from 5:30pm to 9pm on Sept. 24th, with live music and more.

Stay tuned for more announcements about upcoming shows I'm promoting at the Double Door Inn in November and December.

See you at the happenings, and see you on the road.

New Library Talks On The NC Music Scene During The 1960s

For those of you that have asked, "When is your next library talk?" Well, once again, I'm doing this announcement a little later than I had meant to, but I'm doing a talk on the North Carolina music scene during the 1960s at libraries throughout Cabarrus County this month, and July. This talk will cover all genres of music during the 1960s, not just Rock & Roll. I'll be at the Concord Library at 6pm on June 13th, and Mount Pleasant Library at 6pm on the 14th. Lots of photos, lots of music. Here's the links to the talks, via the respective libraries. See you there, and see you on the road.
